Humla Limi Valley Trek Overview

Tucked away in the far-western corner of Nepal, the Limi Valley Trek is truly a hidden treasure, rich with unique history and culture. This 17-day journey takes you through landscapes ranging from lush tropical zones to high alpine terrain, while also offering a rare glimpse into Tibetan Buddhist traditions.

Known as one of the best “off-the-beaten-path” treks in the western Himalayas, the route follows the mighty Karnali River and leads into the remote Upper Limi Valley. Villages like Halji, Til, and Dzang reveal both challenging mountain passes and the beauty of Tibetan-inspired traditions.

In places such as Halji and Gombayok, trekkers can step into what feels like a living museum, with ancient monasteries and ways of life that reflect old Tibet. Despite the hardships faced by the people of this remote valley, their resilience and warmth make the experience unforgettable. The Humla Limi Valley Trek is more than a trek, it’s an unconventional adventure into the untouched heart of western Nepal.

Is Humla Limi Valley Trek difficult?

The Humla Limi Valley trek is perfect for travellers who love remote journeys, simple living, and exploring hidden mountain villages. If you’re seeking untouched trails and the raw beauty of far-western Nepal, this trek is an unforgettable choice.

It’s a demanding trek, not just because of the high altitude but also due to limited facilities and challenging access. Proper acclimatisation is essential as you climb higher. Since there are no teahouses along much of the route, camping is a big part of the experience.

We highly suggest packing wisely, as the excess baggage will only strain your body. Camping trekking not only requires physical strength, you also have to be mentally prepared for this adventure.

However, you’ll also meet welcoming locals along the way whose warmth and hospitality make the journey even more memorable.

Humla Limi Valley Trekking Permit

You need to obtain a Restricted Area Permit (RAPs), costing USD50 per person for the first 7 days and USD10 per person per day thereafter.

Restricted Area Permits (RAPs) are crucial in Nepal for protecting the environment, preserving culture, and ensuring safety in sensitive areas. These permits help manage tourism, support local communities, and maintain the delicate balance of fragile ecosystems.

Approximately an one hour flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj make you witness the western part of the Himalayas, i.e. Langtang, Manaslu, Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges.

Nepalgunj lies near the Indian border, upon landing here you will feel the city is quite warmer than Kathmandu. We check into the hotel and you can stroll around the city, which is normally busy due to inter-country trade. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner provided.

Early in the morning, we will reach Nepalgunj airport and take a approx 45 minutes flight to Simikot observing the Churen Himal. As soon as you enter Simikot you will feel the change in air, from the warm environment you will be directly encountering the himalayan fresh air.

We will ascend uphill enjoying the pine forest and the perfect view of Karnali river just below the trail. We walk through the villages ?f Toling ?nd Dharapani ?nd go through a few waterfalls b?f?r? we ascend more to Danda Karmi village. Finally after crossing the Humla Karnali River suspension bridge, we reach Dharapuri. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner provided.

Note: Flights from Nepalgunj to Simikot can sometimes be uncertain. Weather conditions in the mountains often cause delays, and with only a few airlines operating on this route, passengers occasionally face issues getting seats even with tickets. The limited airlines on this route hold a monopoly, and it’s part of the challenge of reaching such remote destinations.

Early morning after breakfast, the trail still follows the Karnali river all the way till Kermi. One of the main highlights of today’s trail is hot springs that you can actually enjoy. We can also visit two ancient monasteries; Lhundrup Choeling Gompa and Laikyo Gompa. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner provided.

The trail is quite easy but we will gradually gain the elevation this day. Remember to stay hydrated this day and take a break while walking. After around a 6 hour trek, we will reach Muchu. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner provided.

This is one of the challenging days of the trek, with rough glacial terrain and increasing altitude. The route involves crossing small streams, ascending through coniferous forests, and navigating rocky trails with occasional moraine paths.

Despite the physical demands, the untouched scenery and sense of remoteness make it rewarding. Arriving at Yarig, a high plateau campsite, feels like a true milestone. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner provided.

After having breakfast very early, we head out on a demanding day of the trek as you head toward the Nara La Pass. The journey begins from 5 AM to avoid strong winds at the pass. The ascent is steep and strenuous, yet richly rewarding with breathtaking views that may include Mount Kailash and the vast Tibetan Plateau. We will gain around 1,000 m today, so it is really important to listen to your body.

After the pass, a long descent leads us to Hilsa. Since you remain at high altitude, it is vital to rest well, stay hydrated, and maintain a steady, measured pace. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner provided.

Your destination, Manepeme, is a charming village adorned with fluttering prayer flags and stone houses with flat rooftops. Take time to explore its narrow paths, soak in the unique culture, and experience the serene atmosphere. Although less demanding than yesterday’s trek, the day remains incredibly rewarding and scenic. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner provided.

Leaving Manepeme, the trail follows the Humla Karnali River, weaving through rugged gorges and steep terrain. As you draw closer to Hilsa, the last settlement before the Tibetan border, the surroundings take on a different energy.

Once in Halji, you can visit the 800-year-old Rinchenling Monastery, an important Buddhist centre and a treasure of the region. The walk is scenic and relatively gentle, offering both natural beauty and a glimpse into the valley’s rich history and traditions. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner provided.

Today is a rest day in Halji, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the culture and beauty of the Limi Valley. You can leisurely walk through the village, visit traditional homes, or simply stay absorbing the serene atmosphere.

Daily life unfolds around you, women drying vegetables or weaving carpets on rooftops, showcasing the community’s self-reliant lifestyle. Beyond cultural exploration, this day provides much-needed rest and helps your body acclimatise to the altitude before continuing deeper into the valley. At 4741m, it is your highest overnight stop, so focus on rest, hydration, and preparation for the next day. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner provided.

Leaving Halji, the trail leads further into the Limi Valley, crossing the Tagtsi Khola by suspension bridge before winding through terraced fields and barley farms. Your destination is Dhukling, one of the most secluded valleys. Overlooking the settlement is Rizing Ling Gompa, a newer Drukpa Kagyu monastery that adds spiritual charm to the area.

Dhukling itself is peaceful and remote, surrounded by wide mountain views and open skies. It offers a genuine cultural experience and a chance to witness the rhythm of daily village life. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner provided.

Fuel up with a good breakfast, as today’s journey will be a long one. The climb is steady and challenging, so take it slow, rest when needed, and enjoy the stunning scenery around you. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner provided.

From Risarb we trek all the way to Lapche, the famous view point of Mt. Kailash. From this point, you can view the sacred Mount Kailash, a revered peak deeply significant in Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain traditions.

We will spend some time here offering the prayers and observing the spiritual sense of the place. After that, we will return toward the Risarb and again toward the Takchhe. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner provided.

Located in Nepal’s Humla district, Nyalu La Pass rises to 4,995 metres (16,388 ft). This high pass rewards trekkers with breathtaking vistas of Humla’s raw, rugged, and untouched landscapes, making it a true haven for adventurers.

From the top, the trail drops steadily before reaching Tsonga, your campsite for the night.

As you descend, the scenery transforms once more, greener slopes appear. Though challenging, the journey is balanced by the shifting landscapes and the rewarding sense of moving forward. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner provided.

Compared to earlier days, today’s walk is easier and less demanding. The path descends through juniper forests and open pastures, with the lower altitude making the journey more comfortable.

Passing by scattered hamlets, you eventually reach Kermi, a charming village known for its old houses and vibrant traditions. Depending on your energy, you can take time to explore its narrow lanes or simply relax at camp. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner provided.

Today, the trail descends significantly, easing the trek as you approach the conclusion of your journey through the scenic Humla and Limi Valley region. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner provided.

On your last day of trekking, start with a gentle morning walk that gradually becomes steeper as you climb toward Simikot. The trail offers rewarding views of valleys, forests, and distant snow-covered peaks.

Passing through villages like Majgaon, you’ll ascend to the ridge where Simikot comes into view. Here, small shops offer snacks or souvenirs. Conclude your trek by celebrating with your group and enjoying your final night in the mountains. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner provided.

In the early morning, take a flight over the mountains to the low-lying city of Nepalgunj, with time for lunch before your onward flight to Kathmandu. Best Time to do Humla Limi Valley Trek

The best time to visit Limi Valley is from March to May (Spring) and September to early December (Autumn), when the skies are clear and the landscapes are at their most beautiful.

Since the valley lies in a partial rain-shadow, trekking is still possible between June and August (monsoon). However, air transport during this season can often be delayed or cancelled due to weather conditions.

Winter treks in this region are not recommended, as high mountain passes are usually blocked by snow, making the trails extremely difficult and unsafe to cross.

Altitude Sickness During Humla Limi Valley Trek

The Limi Valley Trek is best suited for those with prior trekking experience. A good level of fitness, stamina, and the ability to adapt to unpredictable conditions are essential.

If you’ve trekked at high altitudes before and don’t mind the simplicity of true Himalayan camping, without facilities like showers, toilets, or electricity, then this adventure is perfect for you. Be prepared for long walking days, rewarding you with stunning wilderness and cultural encounters.

It’s important to prepare your body in advance. Focus on building leg strength and improving your cardio endurance, as the thinner air at higher elevations makes breathing more challenging. Remember, altitude sickness can affect anyone, regardless of age or fitness level, even the strongest mountaineers.

Accommodation in Humla Limi Valley Trek

The Humla Limi Valley trek takes you into one of Nepal’s most remote and least explored regions, where the population is sparse and modern facilities are rare. Since there are no teahouses or food options along most of the route, this trek is entirely based on camping. A few basic teahouses in Simikot and nearby areas may provide limited supplies, but the journey largely relies on self-sufficiency.

For comfort, high-quality tents are provided along with a full camping setup, including a kitchen, dining, sleeping, and toilet arrangements. Essential items such as a gas stove, cooking utensils, towels, hand wash, toilet paper, and even dining tables and chairs are carried along to ensure a safe and manageable trekking experience.

Since there are no teahouses along the trail, meals are freshly prepared by the trek’s cook. Accommodation is mainly in tented camps, while rest days are spent in the best available hotels with basic yet comfortable facilities. Meals are simple but hearty, typically including the Nepali staple dal-bhat, vegetable curries, soups, eggs, bread, porridge, noodles, seasonal vegetables, salads, and hot drinks like herbal tea, ginger tea, and coffee.

Transportation at Humla Limi Valley Trek

The journey begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, followed by a short flight from Nepalgunj to Simikot, the starting point of the trek. After completing the trek, we retrace the route back with flights from Simikot to Nepalgunj and then onward to Kathmandu. The rest of the adventure is completed on foot along the trail.

However, the flights from Nepalgunj to Simikot can sometimes be uncertain. Weather conditions in the mountains often cause delays, and with only a few airlines operating on this route, passengers occasionally face issues getting seats even with tickets.

The limited airlines on this route hold a monopoly, and it’s part of the challenge of reaching such remote destinations. In these cases, we may need to take a road trip sometimes.
