Mundum Trail Trek Overview

Mundum trail trek is a newly introduced trekking trail specifically designed for those who seek to walk beyond the established trekking circuits. This newly formed cultural route covers Khotang, Bhojpur, and Solukhumbu districts in Eastern Nepal.

The name “Mundum” reflects the cultural beliefs of the Kirati community living in the region. Mundum trail is more than a destination, it is a living museum of the culture and lifestyle of Kirati Rai.

This long ridge walking experience for the trekkers provides constant panoramas of five of the world’s highest peaks: Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and Kanchenjunga. Mundum trail is yet to be discovered by mass tourism. This trek should be your ideal choice if you are seeking raw beauty, ecological diversity, and a spiritual corner within the sub-alpine and alpine landscapes of the East.

Where is the Mundum Trail Trek?

The Mundum Trail Trek is situated in the far-eastern hills of Nepal. This trail lies between Khotang and Bhojpur districts. Mundum trail route is also a bridge between the lower hills and the high Himalayan regions of Solukhumbu and Sankhuwasabha.

The trail starts from the sacred pilgrimage site of Halesi Mahadevsthan, approx 225 KM from Kathmandu. Geographically, Mundum trail sits between two holy rivers of Nepal, Dudh Koshi and Sun Koshi rivers. The trail mostly consists of the landscape of forests, terraced fields, and high-altitude pastures known as "kharkas".

Mundum Trail Trek Permits

Travelers must have a Trekkers' Information Management System (TIMS) card during the trek. This permit card is strictly enforced in this region to monitor the safety of the trekkers. Additionally, depending on the specific administrative boundaries crossed, local municipality permits or conservation fees may be required, such as the local trekking permit issued by district offices.

Useful Info

Best Time to do Mundum Trail Trek

The best trekking seasons are Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November). Spring is famous for the blooming rhododendron forests and clear morning views. Autumn offers the most stable weather and exceptionally crisp mountain vistas after the monsoon rains. Winter treks are possible but can be extremely cold, while the monsoon season brings leeches and obscured views.

Altitude Sickness During Mundum Trail Trek

Mundum Trail Trek is a moderate route where the altitude increases very slowly. However, it doesn’t mean we should be carefree. As we stay above 3,000 meters for multiple days, having awareness of AMS is very important.

Monitoring of the symptoms like headache, nausea, and dizziness should be done. Along with that we need to follow the prevention strategies that include ascending slowly (the 300-500m rule), staying well-hydrated (3-4 litres daily), and avoiding alcohol. Our guides will be there to monitor you and your oxygen saturation levels daily. However, we also request you to maintain the prevention rule rather than leaving your guide to monitor every basic thing.

Physical Fitness & Preparations for the Mundum Trail Trek

Mundum Trail Trek trek is easy to moderate, making it accessible to those with a basic level of fitness. However, walking/staying in a remote area for multiple days is not as easy as you think and we highly recommend preparing 4 to 6 months in advance. Aerobic exercises like hiking, running, or swimming are very effective in order to build stamina for 5-7 hour walking days. With this, your leg and core will thank you during the days of your trek.

Accommodation in Mundum Trail Trek

Mundum Trail is a newly developed trail in a rural area. So, expect very simple and authentic accommodation that provides a simple room, bed, blankets and shared washroom and dining spaces. Most nights are spent in community-run lodges sharing you an authentic experience of the respected culture. In more remote sections, we take tented camps (kharkas) along with us to provide a true wilderness experience under the stars.

Foods and Drinks at Mundum Trail Trek

The staple meal we will get during the entire trek is Dal Bhat (lentil soup and rice), which provides you with sustained energy for trekking. However, teahouses also offer noodles, momos, porridge, and potato dishes. For cultural flavour, try Tongba (fermented millet beer) or Raksi (distilled liquor) in the lower villages. We don’t recommend trying alcohol at high altitudes. Additionally, take a water purifier tablet with you and drink treated or boiled water to avoid stomach issues.
